Councillor McCann Meeting Report (March 5, 2019)
The Flying Fathers Triple H Charity Challenge
The Flying Fathers Triple H Charity Challenge took place on the evening of February 20th at the Bobby Orr Community Centre. In a match-up with our local Eager Beavers the evening made for a memorable event. Although the Flying Fathers won by a significant margin, the Eager Beavers probably have grounds to appeal the final score, especially when scrimmage football broke out. The event generated funds for three worthy charities, Hope Pregnancy Support Centre of Parry Sound, Habitat for Humanity, Parry Sound Chapter and Hospice West Parry Sound. We want to thank the Flying Fathers and the Eager Beavers team, the corporate sponsors, those who made personal donations, arena staff, volunteers, the Mark MacFee band and certainly to all who attended the game. This event is testament to the fact that when the community comes together we all win. Our website, http://www.flyingfathershockeyinparrysound.com will remain active for the remainder of 2019. Please check it out from time to time as photographs and information are added.Belvedere Heights Board of Management Meeting
On Wednesday, February 27th, I attended the Belvedere Heights Board of Management Meeting. We are moving forward with Strategic Planning and Option #4 of four sets of priorities established by the board. We are focussing on "Sustainable Core Services" which includes a) conducting a strategic business analysis, b) assessing the desirability, feasibility and viability of current and future services and d) offering sustainable services that align with our vision. Our operating budget for 2019 is set at $9,218,550, a 4.93% increase over last year's (2018) of $8,830,633. We received some unexpected provincial funding and so our levy increase is set only at 1.5%. Other housekeeping motions were handled and KPMG will being handling our annual financial audit. There is one Life Lease unit available for sale. It's Unit 101. Contact Belvedere Heights for information.West Parry Sound District Museum Board Meeting
On Thursday evening, February 28th I attended the monthly board meeting for the West Parry Sound District Museum. Administrative housekeeping duties, reviewing our rental policy with some minor revisions, exploring the possibility of converting the back office into an archive room. This has been budgeted for and is reflected in the 2019 operational plan. We will be working with the Parry Sound Public Library for a joint yard sale fund raising event on July 6th. Also an update to the model railroad installation in the E. Roy Smith Gallery and the February fundraiser. We have been fortunate to benefit from an anonymous doner who has matched contributions made to our Go Fund Me Page and we are moving ahead and very excited about this new addition.Friends of Belvedere Fundraising
On behalf of the Friends of Belvedere I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who contribute to our cans and bottles collection! Money raised goes to support seniors in need, whether living at Belvedere or at large throughout the West District. Funds also go to special purchases from time to time which are not covered by the levy or through provincial funding. Over $50,000 has been raised by the Friends in the past 6 or 7 years. We take beer cans, beer bottles, wine and liquor bottles - even the plastic containers, wine skins and we even take pop cans and sell the aluminum by weight. Please consider dropping your empties at special depots including Sobey's, and transfer stations including McFarlane, Foley (Brooks Rd), Humprey, Orrville and McKellar. By the way volunteers are needed for this initiative. If interested, please contact me and I will put you in touch with the organization.
