Councillor McCann Meeting Report (November 5, 2019)

Belvedere Heights Long Term Care, Life Lease, Community Support Services AGM

On Thursday evening, October 17, 2019, I attended the Belvedere Heights Long Term Care Annual General Meeting in the Fireside Lounge at Belvedere Heights.  In addition to providing our latest year-end financial statements, our guest speaker was Jim Hanna, Communications and Public Relations Officer at West Parry Sound Health Centre.  He talked about local efforts being made to establish an Ontario Health Team (OHT) for the West District.  He described some of the goals, objectives and processes pertaining to a local integrated health care system replacing the Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs) throughout the province.

Belvedere Heights Board of Management Monthly Meeting
Then on Wednesday morning, October 23, 2019, I attended the Belvedere Heights Board of Management Monthly Meeting.  Financial statements were reviewed and accepted.  We reviewed our bylaws pertaining to board meetings.  In a second-round request the province has invited applications for new long-term care beds.  In 2018 it announced that it was committed to adding 15,000 new long term care beds in five years and redeveloping 15,000 older beds to modern design.  We have been asked by the Ministry and certainly the need is there and so we will be moving ahead with a request for just over twenty beds.  Also, Belvedere Heights is inviting the Municipalities of Archipelago, Carling, McDougall, McKellar, McMurrich/Monteith, Seguin , Whitestone and The Town of Parry Sound to the Mayors, Councillors, CAO's and designates to attend an information meeting at Belvedere on Thursday, 7:00PM to receive news and details of Belvedere's Strategic Plan.  We hired Robert Berg CA, CPA, President of Assured Care Consulting Inc. to perform an Operational Review and Financial Analysis of our business models.  This involves three business ventures and a means to discover a more accountable and desirable path to follow.  This included a strategic study with a view to the future.  We wish to provide our funders and stakeholders with an opportunity to speak and provide input.  Mr. Berg. will be conducting this session.  Incorporated into this, of course, is how this will align with the introduction of a new model of care through the Ontario Health Teams.

On Wednesday afternoon, October 23, 2019, I participated in the Mock Council Meeting with St. Peter's Grade 5/6 class as part of Local Government Week.  With Councillor Keith, Mayor McGarvey, Town Clerk, Rebecca Johnson, Bylaw Enforcement Officer Ulysses Gibson, Director of Finance Stephanie Phillips and Revenue and Taxation Supervisor Rob Beaumont, as always it was a most enjoyable time and thank you to Administrative Assistant, Ann Hurdman for putting it all together.  Within the mock meeting, the kids had a great opportunity to see first hand how a Council meeting is run and that each step along the way is an important part of the process.

Poppy Raising Flag at Town Office
On Friday, October 25th at 10:00AM, with Councillor Burden, I was proud to take part in the Poppy Flag Raising Ceremony at the Parry Sound Town Office.  By request of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #117, Council authorizes November 2, 2019 as the Legion's annual tag day in Parry Sound, and that the Poppy Flag be flown at the Town Office from October 25th to November 11th.  Remember to support the poppy campaign and to wear a poppy in remembrance.

Wellness Centre & Pool Committee Meeting
On Monday evening, October 28, 2019, I attended the Second Meeting of the Wellness Centre & Pool Committee held here in Council Chambers.  It is very exciting and encouraging to see the effort, participation, cooperation and momentum at this time.  I have the best feeling this will be a reality in the near future.

Once again this year, the West Parry Sound District Community Support Services is featuring "Be A Santa To A Senior".  This is an annual "Adopt a Senior" campaign and this year, 2019, marks our 8th year.  The goal is to adopt seniors who may be alone, may not have family and may be in need of a Christmas Cheer gift bag.  Community Support Services is asking for donations of toiletries, long reach grabbers, tea towels, bath towels, sugar-free treats and other items.  Items can be dropped before December 5th between 8:30AM and 4:00PM at the Parry Sound North Star, 66A Bowes Street, or to Community Support Services, 21 Belvedere Avenue, the Lower Back Auditorium Entrance.

All of the services are provided in agreement with the North East Integration Network (NELHIN) and are partially funded by the Ministry of Health Long Term Care through the NELHIN.  In accordance with their service agreement, the programs, Senior Safekeeping, Friendly Visiting and Adopt a Senior are offered free of charge.  For Meals on Wheels, Diner’s Clubs, Lunch & Learns and Volunteer Transportation a minimal client user fee is required.
