Councillor McCann Meeting Report (May 19, 2026)

Parry Sound Public Library Monthly Board Meeting
On Wednesday morning, May 13, 2026 I attended the Parry Sound Public Library Monthly Board Meeting in person at the library. We welcomed new Board Member, Councillor Alice Barton of Archipelago.  The Board decided to designate funds we received from the LSC Disbursement Funds towards the purchase of one desktop computer and one laptop, the latter required for administration. You'll recall that in March this year, the library received $9,814.82 as a result of the dissolution of Library Services Centre (LSC.).  The board had several options available and decided this found money could well go towards the needed hardware.  There was more discussion on what to do about the downstairs auditorium fire exit where just outside in the stairwell cubical, loitering and undesired behaviour continues to take place.  There were plans to erect a gating system, but we've run into logistical matters, plus shortage of skilled labour to complete the project.  The Board is now considering enclosing that entire space with a new fire door at ground level, up from the auditorium original exit.  The Treasurer’s Report for the month of May, 2026 was received and approved:  The 2026 First Quarter Statistics were presented.  Discussion over ongoing and upcoming library programs was had.  Remember, for all program information, newsletters and information about the Public Library, we encourage you to check out the website at www.parrysoundlibrary.com. The Rotary Club of Parry Sound has agreed to provide a generous donation to the library. These funds will go towards funding public computers in the library. The Library Staff and Board extend a very huge, sincere thank you to The Rotary Club!

Parry Sound Economic Development & Tourism Strategy
On Thursday morning at 11:00, May 14, 2026, I participated in a conversation with Ian Duff of McSweeney Firm as part of the Parry Sound Economic Development & Tourism Strategy endeavour.  I had an opportunity to answer a number of questions providing my own thoughts on our area's strengths, weaknesses, our growth, which includes development and infrastructure, tourism and what the best attractions and qualities the town has to encourage economic growth.

West Parry Sound District Community Support Services
I would like to take this opportunity to give a big shout-out to The West Parry Sound District Community Support Services (WPSDCSS).  As you know, it's been just over a year since the organization relocated to downtown Parry Sound.  It was initially a reluctant move, but has evolved into a wonderful, positive experience in so many ways.  Located now at 60 James Street, the agency has so much more space in which to grow, tremendous exposure to the public with its doors opening up to the main street, James Street.  The programs, services and staff have all increased.  They continue to offer transportation, meals on wheels, friendly visiting, seniors' provisioning and safekeeping, seniors outreach, exercise programs, lunch and learn events and more.  As you may know, I have been a volunteer driver since the months prior to COVID and my wife and I have managed the fundraising program in which we collect redeemable alcohol containers from our two bin locations and cash in.  Due to other commitments I have found it difficult to manage the time required for my work with WPSDCSS and have retired effective May 8, 2026.  I want to thank all those who have contributed to this fundraiser.  We are fortunate that this endeavour is now being managed by Tyler Eddington.  He has made it possible for me to step back knowing the project will continue under his competent and dedicated management.  I also want to thank the staff at WPSDCSS for treating us so very well over the years.  I wish the best for them and I remind you that you can learn all about the agency by visiting its website at https://www.parrysoundsupportservices.ca.  Visit them at 60 James Street, ground floor or call (705) 746-5602.
