Councillor McCann Meeting Report (October 20, 2026)

Municipal Election 2026 Meet & Greet Candidates Meeting
On Thursday evening, October 8, 2026, I participated in the Municipal Election 2026 Meet & Greet Candidates Meeting at the Bobby Orr Community Centre.  Sponsored by the Parry Sound Area Chamber of Commerce and the Parry Sound North Star, the evening's format was a more casual opportunity for the voters to sit down and talk face-to-face with the candidates.  I found it enjoyable and rewarding, and a one-on-one means to engage in conversation about the issues, their complexity and answer questions directly.  Candidates from Parry Sound as well as neighbouring municipalities gathered to meet their respective residents.

Parry Sound Public Library Monthly Board Meeting
On Wednesday morning, October 14, 2026, the Parry Sound Public Library Board conducted the regular monthly meeting.  While I was not in attendance for this meeting, I do have a brief report to make. The 2027 budget was to be discussed, but the Board thought it was prudent to table this until the next meeting, November 18, 2026.  We are currently working with a pay equity consultant to bring the library up to date from its last review in 2020.  There is the anticipation that the results of this update will cost the library considerably and so it didn’t make sense to develop a budget with such uncertainty over the cost of retroactive payouts and future respective wages.

Parry Sound Public School Students Learn About Municipal Elections
I was pleased to learn that the grade six class at Parry Sound Public School have been studying the municipal elections process.  Students from Mr. Karl Murch's class wrote to those running in this election with a few questions.  I want to congratulate the teacher and students for undertaking civic studies such as our municipal process. Town Staff, Mayor and Council are always pleased to engage the students as they learn about local politics.  Last year we hosted the St. Peter's Grade 5 Student Mock Council Meeting here in Chambers as part of Local Government Week which coincidentally commenced on this very day, one year ago.

Condolences to the Martens and Mortson Families on the Passing of Martha Martens
I would like to extend sincere condolences to the Martens and Mortson Families on the Passing of Martha Martens over this past weekend, on October 17, 2026. She had been ill for some time. You may not know, but following their post secondary education, Martha and her friend Carrie McGown embarked on a venture in which they became the first women to paddle across Canada, 8,850 kilometres. This was in a canoeing trek sponsored by the Royal Canadian Geographic Society. Her faith, family, education and friends were all her very passionate favourities. She will indeed be missed. Her funeral and celebration of life will take place this Saturday, October 24, 2026, at Bayside Family Church, Parry Sound from 12:30 with the funeral service to commence at 2:00 pm. There is also visitation the prior evening at the church. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families.
