Councillor McCann Meeting Report (January 16, 2024)

Congratulations to Order of Parry Sound Recipient Glenda Clayton
Congratulations to Glenda Clayton, on receiving the 2023 Order of Parry Sound for her numerous contributions to our community! Mayor McGarvey presented Glenda with the award at the Mayor’s New Year’s Levee at the Bobby Orr Community Centre, Sunday, January 7, 2024. In front of a standing ovation, she very humbly accepted the award stating that she felt there were so many others more deserving.  She eagerly shared the credit for the award by naming numerous citizens.  Glenda moved to Parry Sound in 1999.  Her employment and volunteer efforts, including with the Greater Georgian Bay Reptile Awareness Program, Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve, Community Living, Parry Sound Community Gardens, Parry Sound Nature Club, Parry Sound Community Kitchen, Women and Skis and Harvest Share have demonstrated great testament of her passion for our environment and also gardening for subsistence.  Very well done!  Photo Credit: Thom Morrissey Photography

Parry Sound Public Library Board Meeting
On Wednesday morning, January 10, 2024, I attended the Parry Sound Public Library Board Meeting via ZOOM. Stephen Heder was elected new Vice Chair. CEO and Financial Reports were received. Dates for board meetings throughout 2024 were established. A 2024 Board Plan was initially presented which includes Policy Reviews, Strategic Planning and Building Assessment.  The North Bay & District Multicultural Centre, an organization that provides settlement services to newcomers wants to set up shop in Parry Sound in partnership with the Parry Sound Public Library. That organization has been tentatively approved to hire a local Settlement Worker in the Parry Sound area. The program initiative is called, "Library Settlement Partnership", and is well established in other areas of Ontario.  As always, please visit the library's website for complete information on services, programs and hours of operation, https://www.parrysoundlibrary.com.

Condolences to the McGarvey Family
I would take this opportunity at this time to express sincere sympathies to the McGarvey family on the passing of Ida McGarvey, January 9, 2024 at her home in Orrrville.  She was 89. To you Mr. Mayor and your family, we offer our condolences and prayers.

Happy New Year
Finally, ahead of us is a brand new year, 2024 and on behalf of my wife Josey and myself, we would like to wish Mayor, Council, Staff and the people of Parry Sound a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year! We pray for peace throughout the world, hoping for resolve where war and conflict are an everyday thing for people living in and around such parts of the world.
