Councillor Input to Parry Sound Official Plan Policy and Directions
On Monday morning, May 27, 2024, I met with Kathy Suggitt and Chloe Patten of MHBC Planning, Urban Design & Landscape Architecture by phone for the purpose of providing my input into the Parry Sound Official Plan Policy and Directions. It was an opportunity for me to share my thoughts and vision for the town's future.
West Parry Sound District Museum Monthly Board Meeting
On Thursday evening, May 23, 2024, I attended the West Parry Sound District Museum Monthly Board Meeting via ZOOM. The April 2024 Financial Report was received. The Reconnecting Exhibition in the Lion’s Room has been closed but staff will continue to make requests through social media for the public to help identify unknown individuals in our photographs. This project has been very popular and as such the Museum is considering making this a travelling exhibit around the District. Staff is now researching possibilities and locations for this. The Accessibility Plan and Policy were brought into discussion with some minor alterations made to both the plan and the policy, for the most part correcting typos and grammatical errors. However there were no recommended changes to either document. Discussion regarding the development of a vacation policy came about as a result of many requests for time off in July. With a small staff and being just about the busiest time of the year, the Board feels a policy is now required. The Museum is hiring a summer student for a maximum of 308 hours during the summer months. The Annual General Meeting is scheduled for June 20, 2024 at 7pm at the Museum. This will be combined with the opening of the Waubuno Exhibit ceremonies. Refreshments will be available and there will be time to explore the exhibit. The Board will then hold its regular meeting the following week, June 27, 2024, at 5:00 p.m.
Expression of Sympathy to the Mitchell Family
I would like to take this opportunity to express condolences to the Mitchell family on the passing of Robert, “Bob”, Mitchell, who passed away on May 16, 2024 at the age of 91. He is survived by his wife of nearly 68 years, four children, grandchildren and extended family. He was a teacher and principal for 35 years! Most of his career, which started in 1952, was spent in the West Parry Sound Area, at schools in Nobel, McDougall, Carling, Pointe au Baril and Parry Sound which included Isabella and Victory schools. His retirement was an opportunity to examine new horizons. He volunteered for over 25 years. He was the Chairman of St. Joseph’s Hospital, Vice-Chair of Parry Sound General Hospital, and a member of the board for the West Parry Sound Health Centre and Lakeland Long Term Care. He was pivotal in the establishment of the new hospital. He was also an avid outdoors man and was a member of Parry Sound Anglers and Hunters for over 34 years. I first met Bob when I was hired to complete some web design work for that organization. Then in 2015, I had the honour of interviewing Bob about his time at Parry Sound Victory School. This was part of the Parry Sound Victory School Commemorative Project paying tribute to the school upon its closing after nearly 100 years. His motto, “see a need, lend a hand”. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. Visitation is this Friday, June 7, 2024 followed by a service on Saturday at St. Peters Church, Parry Sound.
