Councillor McCann Meeting Report (July 2, 2025)

Waterfront Master Plan Open House
On Wednesday evening, June 25, 2026 from 6:00 to 7:30, I attended the  Waterfront Master Plan Open House at the Charles W. Stockey Centre. The final draft was presented but there was still time to hear from the public one last time.  In fact you can provide your final comments on line by July 18th by visiting the town’s website at https://www.parrysound.ca.  On Wednesday evening, there were preliminary designs for developing key waterfront spots presented and also guidelines for planning and development.  As was discussed by the presenters, the first step is setting parameters, and that's where the policies then come into play.

West Parry Sound District Museum AGM
On Thursday afternoon, June 26, 2025 I attended in person the West Parry Sound District Museum Annual General Meeting (AGM).  The 2024 Annual Report was reviewed and accepted.  The 2024 Financial Report prepared and presented by Gingrich Harris Copeland, Chartered Professional Accountants at the Museum’s May meeting was also accepted at the AGM.  The Board appointed the Auditor, the incumbent, Gingrich Harris Copeland as the Museum's 2025 Auditor.  In other business there was discussion on engaging the Town of Parry Sound to help in improving access to the Museum and Tower Hill Gardens.  The condition of George Street, lack of sidewalks and way finding signs were brought up.

Following the AGM, we officially opened the the exhibit titled "Lights of the Bay".  The exhibit is available to the public through to October this year.  It dives into the changing methods and technologies used when navigating the waters of Georgian Bay.  It highlights the history of the lighthouses that light up the shoals and shores of the Parry Sound District and which guide travellers to safety.  This exhibition was prompted by a collaborative project with the Township of the Archipelago to temporarily store artifacts from the Pointe Au Baril lighthouse while it undergoes renovations.  As always check out the Museum’s website at https://www.museumontowerhill.com/.

Waubuno Park Beach New Playground Equipment
On Friday morning, June 27, 2025, I attended the opening of the Waubuno Park Beach new playground installation. Staff, Mayor and Council, and members of the installation company stood for a group photo, while the rain managed to let up! The new installation is modern, and is designed for safety, fun, exercise and imagination. A great deal of thanks goes to April McNamara and the Parks & Recreation department for organizing this project. There was a great deal of emphasis on having this particular playground ready for the first weekend of the summer break. Staff and the installation company will now focus on the other parks in the Town of Parry Sound.

Summer Is Here
On Sunday afternoon, June 29, 2025, my wife and I strolled through Waubuno Park Beach to observe how children and families were engaging with the new playground equipment. There was no doubt that fun was had by all. No piece of equipment seemed to sit abandoned for very long!  The park and beach area were full of people, activity and quite simply, fun in the sun.  It was so great to see and feel the return of summer and more importantly, residents and visitors enjoying what we like to call The Lakeland Playland!
